Oh they just had to go and confuse me now they didn't they? Well...I don't usually say this in an article context but I'm gonna: OMGZ!!!!!1111!!!! The Silent Movie Theatre has returned to their 4 silents a month lineup (kinda...mostly 4)! This is in contrast to their last announcement that silents would go from 4 a month to 1.
I've tried my damndest to find out if this is permanent or not, but my email to the Cinefamily is on 'delay' whatever that means. Other contacts said they were unsure if it was a permanent change, but apparently it was the Cinefamily who liked the theme and ran with it.
Originally only Olive Thomas' "Flapper" and Tod Browning's "The Mystic" (which was chosen as a debut by The Silent Treatment) were scheduled for February and March. Now 5 more films have joined them. Though I have no official answer, it looks to me like those two are still slated to be 'special events' and the rest of the silents will count under normal programming (i.e. buy your membership...its a sweeet deal! But again, I have not been able to confirm this.)
If you just wanted to attend those two screenings take note: they changed the dates. "The Flapper" will now run on February 2nd, and kick off 'flapper month'. Other flapper films scheduled are "Getting Gertie's Garter" with "Up in Mabel's Room" (Marie Prevost films) on 2/17, and "The Patsy" (Marion Davies) on 2/24.
March is 'Silent Chic' month featuring films styled by the likes of Erte and Adrian. It kicks off with "The Mystic" (Tod Browning) on 3/3. That's followed by "Women Love Diamonds" (Edmund Goulding) on 3/17, A Woman of Affairs (GARBO!) on 3/24.
Permanent or not a solid way to keep our silents back is to ATTEND AS MANY SCREENINGS AND BUY AS MANY CUPCAKES AS POSSIBLE. I highly encourage any silent film fan near Los Angeles to do just that. Click here for more info, times, directions, and to purchase tickets.
