We're back! Sorry my computer was down for about a week...due to a wrecked power cable. What next? AH!
Anyways its officially October...and officially there is some bad ass Silent Halloween stuff going on. The new Silents Schedule will be up soon, but for now check out these fun Halloween Events.
Silent Movie Theatre: Lon Chaney and PARTY!
For the month of October the Silent Movie Theatre is running nothing but horror movies...whatever the sub genre may be. Since modern Halloween really didn't come into being until the 1930s this leaves a peculiar position for silents. However ala TCM they went with the theme of Lon Chaney...who's films show the scary side of human nature...much scarier then getting murdered by Jason or something (think being eaten by a lion).
2 films have already passed but the best Lon films are yet to come. The Unknown is on the 15th, The Hunchback of Notre Dame is on the 22nd, and Phantom of the Opera is on the 29th. I must say I'd never seen a Lon film before now...but he was just amazing. Seriously.
Also on the 31st the theatre will be throwing a Halloween party. It starts with a viewing of "The Tingler" which features this very theatre in a subplot...and reportedly they may or may not be shocking us during the viewing. Afterwards out comes the booze and quote 'vittles' for a Halloween party. There will be karaoke and costume prizes. Tickets are $8 for members, $12 for non members. Click here for tickets.
Hollywood Heritage Presents Haunted Hollywood
I'm still on the fence about these styled things. Dead celebs haunting places seems a little too kooky-riffic for me. However...it is still very interesting. And you know how much I love Hollywood Heritage! So kicking off their Evenings at the Barn series is the Haunted Hollywood screening on October 22nd at 7:30pm. Marc Wanamaker (Hollywood Heritage President and author of the 1994 book 'Haunted Hollywood') will show a photographic tour of well...haunted Hollywood.
There will also be 2 films, a Our Gang short titled "The First Round Up" and a 1931 documentary of abandon silent studios titled "Ghosts of Hollywood". The evening will take place at of course ''The Barn''. Click here for directions. Cost is $5 for members, $8 for non members. Hollywood Forever Presents: Dia De Los Muertos (Day of the Dead)Now this is more like it...I like the celebration of life! In its 9th year Hollywood Forever takes on the Mexican "Day of the Dead" on November 1st. The event features live music, spiritual blessings, theatre performances, lectures, and Mexican food (yay!). In what is one of their proudest aspects is the altar tradition. People are invited to create altars to honor a person in the cemetery and the best altars can win prizes ($1000 prizes). There is an entrance fee of $50 (which I don't care for) but if you want to sign up you can click here.
For the poorer folk amongst us the actual celebration kicks off at 4pm on November 1st and goes till 11pm. Cost is $5, but children under 10 are free. People are encouraged to come dressed in 'Calaca attire' (Skeltons, click here for some pics from last year). Click here for more information.
