Halloween Continued: Phantom-y

Halloween is less than 4 days away and I must say I'm getting excited! At the beginning of the month we posted a list of some Silent Halloween treats. Well I'm pleased to announce there are a few more, including a very incredible Lon opportunity!

Forget the Talkies Costume Parade

Though I wonder if I'll get any responses I like to believe there is someone else out there dressing up in a Silent Film related costume for Halloween. I *wanted* to be Mary Pickford but do you know how hard it is to find a Victorian era little girl styled costume dress? Since most costumes these days for women my age involve showing booty its impossible. IMPOSSIBLE. So I went the other route: I'm going Theda Bara. And yes I found a long dress for that.

So I'll be posting my picture on November 1st. And if you have a great Silent film costume yourself feel free to send in a pic to misspickford@forgetthetalkies.com by November 5th. If I get any replies they will be posted here for your 15 seconds of fame.

Various US Screenings

Several locations in the US are screening various horror tinged films on Halloween. Please see the great folks at nitrateville for locations and titles.

Phantom of the Opera Screenings

This being the first year I've really followed Silents hardcore I'm amazed at the number of Lon Chaney's "Phantom of the Opera" screenings going on for Halloween.

Nationwide its oddly popular in the midwest with screenings in Michigan, Nebraska, and Minnesota. New Jersey also has a screening. Click here for showtimes.

In Los Angeles we get double the Lon. The Silent Movie Theatre is screening Phantom on October 29th. Click here for tickets. Then to make life even better the Walt Disney Concert Hall will be screening the film on Halloween with the Los Angeles Philharmonic accompanying it. Tickets run between $25 and $45. Click here for tickets. Special thanks to my friend Joey for spotting this one.

If you are fortunate enough to not live in the midwest/unfortunate enough to not live in LA you can download Phantom for free at the internet archive. It's also available on several DVD versions, some including the recut talkie version (Lon did not contribute). Click here to purchase.
