I unfortunately had to leave the beauty of Hollywood yesterday for the hellish (and still ass backwards) Midwest for a few weeks. My seat was towards the back of the plane and since I had 3 hours to kill I was reading D.W.'s bio hoping to get through it one of these days.
It obviously has his name in very huge letters with a picture of him next to a camera in full Director stance. Then probably the funniest thing that will happen during this trip occured. Some 20-30 something year old man was headed to the restroom, and as he waited in line he spotted my book, pointed at Griffith's name, and said, "He was a GREAT WRITER". HA!
True Griffith did come up with many of his own scenarios, and write several plays before and after his fame...but obviously most folk would recognize the name D.W. Griffith as 'the GREAT DIRECTOR'. Poor Mr. Griffith. We'll fix up his legacy though.
On a slightly related note when I arrived in Minneapolis and entered the elevator there was a Swedish luggage guy who reminded me VERY much so in personality, accent, and humor of Karl Dane. Interesting!
PS: I'm hoping to post a very neat article from someone who was 13 when Valentino reached fame if you get my drift! Stay tuned!
