I like the Irish. In fact my Grandfather was Irish (as an American that's as European as I will ever get). I especially like Irish and Silents. Thus the upcoming LA Irish Film Festival is relevant to my interests.
The festival runs between October 2nd and October 5th showcasing Irish involved films through the ages (silents to present). On October 5th they screen "The Iron Horse", and as a closing piece 2 silents will be screened "The Lad from Ireland" and "In the Days of St Patrick". For tickets and more information please click here.
Now as glad as I am to see silents screened, may I just bitch for a moment? "The Iron Horse" has been shown no less then 3 times in LA this past year (twice at the Silent Theatre, once at the Egyptian) and thats TO MY KNOWLEDGE. I find it a boring film...even for a Western. I know others disagree with me but is it really necessary to show it again?
The other 2 Irish films I am not familiar with but I have a qualm with the opening and closing night price tag of $40. Seriously...are you that special? I hate when festivals do that...price themselves right out of the Average Joe's pocket. The other screenings are bout $9-$11 which is much more reasonable.
And no they don't have to listen to me complain on that one but I do have a bone to pick with their glaring lack of Silents and Irish knowledge (or if they know it they sure picked poorly). Mary Pickford's family was Irish...and she made several Irish films (Little Annie Rooney anyone?) That would be SO much more interesting then a repeat of "The Iron Horse". Thomas Meighan was also of Irish blood...why not screen something of his? He was major! Several of Valentino's films involved Irish directors and workers (also let me go out on a limb and assume Natacha nee Winifred Shaughnessy was of Irish blood as well)...so why not one of his?
