Not surprising in the least, people liked to drink in the 1910s. And 20s...despite that whole prohibition thing (which actually made people drink MORE). Since bootlegged booze tasted so bad cocktails became extremely popular and were usually made in honor of events, people, or given funny names. Enrico Caruso got one. Jack Dempsy got one. All sorts of Royalty got one. And so did Miss Pickford. Not surprising in the least, its an extremely girly and pretty (yet a little strong) drink. There's small variations in it depending how good your 'mixology speak' but this is the recipe according to "201 Cocktails" by Maria Costantino (a book worth 36 cents on amazon...buy up!):
Mary Pickford Cocktail:
1 and a half measures white rum
1 teaspoon maraschino
1 and a half measures pineapple juice
1 teaspoon grenadine
Place all the ingredients in a shaker and shake well. Strain into a large cocktail glass filled with crushed ice. Add the cherry on a stick and serve with short straws.
If you don't speak cocktail speak this site and this site both list normal speak recipes:
Mary Pickford Cocktail Normal Speak
1 and a half oz rum
1 oz pineapple juice
One teaspoon grenadine (cherry flavoring)
6 drops maraschino flavoring
Mix and Serve the same way as above minus straws.
If your still in need of instruction this site has a pictorial, scroll bout half way down (not sure Pickford was a vegetarian, but interesting if so!)
I say its time we bring it back! So next time your out, memorize the contents (bar tenders these days don't know many recipes...at least the pretty ones), and order Mary Pickford Cocktails till you hit the floor!
