Frequent readers of this blog will know I have an extreme soft spot for Karl Dane. He's a favorite of mine, especially for his performance in Son of the Sheik. Dane gets no respect. There's a million rumors about him, and much like Thomas Meighan he's been forgotten...despite co-starring in some of the biggest grossing Silents of all time (including THE biggest grossing Silent of all time: The Big Parade). If your too lazy to read our introduction of him then let me at least sum it up for you: he didn't flop in talkies because of his voice, he didn't kill himself because of talkies, and he was just a great guy.
Laura Petersen Balogh has not only dedicated a site to Dane, but has taken on the huge task of writing his biography. Seriously one must appreciate the work, time, and effort a biography takes...and I for one can not wait to read it! And we draw ever closer: Laura just announced that she has found a publisher, McFarland & Company, for the biography. A release date is going to be announced soon so I promise we'll update you then. I demand anyone who even glances at this site buys 10 copies...strictly because Karl was such a fascinating and amazing figure.
Good job and good luck Laura!
