The 13th Annual San Francisco Silent Film Festival

Venturing out of Hollywood, San Francisco has their very own silent film festival now in its 13th year! I'm really excited about this one, and we will be covering and reviewing the event. We got Harold Lloyd, a rare Colleen Moore, a gay love movie from 1924, and a MARY PICKFORD COLOR SCREEN TEST!!! AHHH!!! Seriously even if I lived in New York I'd fly cross country to see that!

The festival takes place over 3 days and screens 11 films, 1 documentary, and shorts before all the films. Here's a quick run down:

Friday July 11th:
Summary: Watch Harold Lloyd and get drunk with film buffs

7pm: The Kid Brother (Harold Lloyd in his second to last silent)
9:15pm: Opening Night party

Saturday July 12th:
Watch some rare Euro films, with lots of edgy buttons pushed!

10am: Amazing tales from the archive (a FREE screening of a film preservation documentary)
11:40am: The Souls of Youth (directed by the infamously murdered William Desmond Taylor)
2:15pm: Two Timid Souls (A French romantic comedy)
4:15pm: Michael (a German film with a gay love story!)
7:45pm: The man who laughs (a gothic gritty love story, with German Expressionist themes!)
10:45pm: The Unknown (considered one of Lon Chaney's best performances, this film also has Norman Kerry and Joan Crawford)

Sunday July 13th:
Watch some extremely rare films that thankfully don't include Brown face!

10:30am: The Adventures of Prince Achmed (the earliest surviving full length animated film...made by a woman no less!)
1:10pm: The Silent Enemy (hybrid documentary about Native Americans)
3:50pm: Her Wild Oats (Colleen Moore, fyi this film is the one with the Pickford color short)
6:10pm: Jujiro (Trippy Japanese film)
8:45pm: The Patsy (William Randolph Hearst's slave...Marion Davies does some comedy!)

My Picks:
I'm not a major Harold Lloyd fan (Chaplin all the way) so Friday isn't big on my schedule. For Saturday Michael and The Unknown are MUSTS. Sunday is the best and I must say The Adventures of Prince Achmed, Her Wild Oats, and The Patsy all are on my list. If you only see ONE film Id recommend Her Wild Oats...as Colleen Moore has the Theda Bara/Olive Thomas problem (made lots of films, but few exist) and that Pickford short is just exciting. Mary never made a color film, so its interesting to see what might have been.

Screening Information
All Films will take place at The Castro Theatre. There will be a lounge for between films hanging out. There are various degrees of passes that you can get to save money when seeing all the films. It generally runs $140 but it can vary. Click here for more information on those. Otherwise each screening has its own price, running between $12-$20 for adults. Children under 12 are free for every screening. The documentary "Amazing Tales from the Archive" is free but you still need to get a ticket (RSVP bitches!) If you're a member of the TSFSFF you save on tickets. Click here for more information on that.
